About the Business
George Baker is proud to have founded George Baker (Shipping) Ltd way back in 1982. The company was established in the Port of Ipswich, providing ship's agency and Customs brokerage services. The ambitious young family business soon earned a reputation as specialists in Customs clearance and opened additional port offices in Harwich and Felixstowe serving importers, exporters and also fellow freight professionals.
However, the removal of the European borders in 1993 meant that Customs clearance documentation was no longer required for inter-community movements and it became necessary to look at new areas of development.
Boosted growth from 2000 onwards saw the company start to fulfil its ambition of widening its range of 'in house' services with the warehousing division in particular taking shape. Between 2005 and 2007 the company began to move away from its previously outsourced facilities.
